Ahmed al-Ahmed, muslim, migrant, hero.

Today is International Migrants Day 2025

So much of the public narrative portrays migrants as vulnerable, needy, dependent. News stories constantly claim they are stealing jobs and pushing up rent prices but just because it is the dominant narrative it doesn’t make it the only narrative.

Ahmed al-Ahmed defined a new narrative on Sunday when he acted as a protector, he risked his own life to save countless others. He showed incredible bravely and he acted from a deep sense of responsibility to the people around him.

In a moment of crisis, Ahmed’s visa status, accent and skin colour did not matter. His conscience, humanity and strong values kicked in.

Bondi, the Jewish community and the country are in pain as we make sense of Sunday's abhorrent shooting attack, as we search for answers may we remember the heroic act of Ahmed, may this moment change how migrants are spoken about every day, not just today
